Message from the Police Department

PARENTS and STUDENTS

As the new school year begins, the Police Department will be vigilant in enforcing bicycle safety regulations. WEAR YOUR HELMET IT’S THE LAW!

ALL INDIVIDUALS UNDER THE AGE OF 17 ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR AN APPROVED HELMET WHEN RIDING A BICYCLE, ROLLAR SKATING, IN-LINE SKATING OR SKATEBOARDING.

SUMMONSES MAY BE ISSUED TO RIDER OR PARENTS

In 2011, a total of 677 bicyclists were killed in motor vehicle crashes. Nine percent of those fatalities were 14 years of age and younger according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Obey all traffic laws. In New Jersey bicycles have the same responsibilities as motor vehicle drivers:

-ride on the right
-obey all signals
-travel with no more than two abreast so that traffic is not impeded
-ride with traffic.

Make sure your bicycle fits you and is in good working order. Inspect the following before each ride to make sure you bicycle is in working order:
-tires/wheels
-brakes
-chain
-lights
-reflectors
-bell
-seat height
